A long weekend of art and beauty in the city of lights
Back in September of this year, it had bothered me a little to go to France and do a lot of sightseeing in Languedoc and Provence but bypass Paris. So I created an excuse and made sure Paris was back on the agenda for a long weekend at the end of October, the excuse being my birthday!

A magical week in beautiful Slovenia!
Ljubljana is a tiny town that can best be described as cute, but not as in coy or spoilt. It\'s charmingly naive, very pretty, and very friendly with a wholly natural beauty devoid of artifice.

New Year’s in Barcelona
It’s always stressful to try and decide what to do on New Year’s Eve: should we stay home with family, or go out somewhere and celebrate at a favorite restaurant, an experience that seldom turns out to be as pleasant as expected.

Budapest in October 2010
Budapest is definitely more cheerful and prosperous-looking than during the Soviet era.

Copenhagen
In Shakespeare’s play "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark"Hamlet, the anti-hero, is famous for his indecisiveness. I seldom if ever suffer from the same affliction (just the opposite, in fact : call me Princess of, or Slave to, Impulsiveness). It took me about 10 minutes to choose the destination for our 13th wedding anniversary : Denmark (Copenhagen). We’ve both never been, not even during our extensive tour of Scandinavia couple of years ago, and we’ve been looking for an excuse to visit. So off...

A week in Italy, May 2010
“Each time one comes to Venice, it reflects back another self, another dream, as if it were partly your own mirror.” So says contemporary author Erica Jong in her epic novel “Serenissima.” I first went to Venice as an impressionable young student of literature, and proceeded to follow the footsteps of Gustav von Aschenbach, the sad protagonist from another book, Thomas Mann’s novella about an aging artist who dies in Venice. That was a more of a pilgrimage for me than a touristic trip...

Scandinavia, 2007
When a trip to Scandinavia in June was first suggested to me, I was rather reluctant because I thought, who in their right minds would leave the June sun of Istanbul behind and go to faraway and cold places? But then curiosity got the better of me, as usual, and I agreed to go. Imagine my surprise when the temperature seldom dropped below the upper 20s during our 2-week stay in the North, and the sun quite literally never stopped shining, and we all got labourer’s tans! The fickle finger of fate...

Dubai
Dubai is the perfect remedy for a lot of people, beaches (because of the climate) and shopping (because it's a tax-free land.) If what you want is warmth in the middle of winter, and if like me you have never been known to refuse an opportunity to shop, Dubai will suit you just fine..

CUBA LIBRE!
Click here for photo gallery! For the New Year of 2006-7, we were radically different (for us!) in our choice of destination: we picked somewhere exotic this time. We went to Cuba, the land of mojitos, music, sacred virgins (of which, more later!), and not-so-virginal natives and last but not least, Fidel “the ultimate leader” as his people refer to him (and they mean it). Ours was an exclusive tour of 19 people including us (2 couples.) The people of the group were one...

Dear All...
This Fall our carefully chosen destination was Russia. We as a group of 6 put together an itinerary, and despite our collective dislike of being herded from room to room in museums and palaces with the constant monotonous drivel of the guide ringing in our ears and drowning us in way too much information, we had to arrange for guided tours in both Moscow and St. Petersburg because we had been forewarned that otherwise it’d be extremely difficult to see much of anything due to the language barrier...
