Young talented artist Sabine Roemer

When I met her I was really taken away by her energy and her lovely smile.

Sabine Roemer is only 30 years old but has already achieved so many goals. I will call her a sculptor and a jewellery designer. She loves to paint but due to her packed schedule she doesn’t have much time to paint anymore.  The jewellery she designs are like pieces of art. At our meeting she was wearing a camel ring from her latest collection “Arabian Nights” which is amazing.

Tell us how you decided to become a jewellery designer?
I was born in Germany and by the age 23 I had finished my master degree as the youngest female goldsmith.  I became interested in jewellery from an early age, when I was 15 years old my mother took me to Dietmar Kohn for some work experience from our school. By the end of the first day I had designed and made my first ring. It was then that I realised what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I found my vocation.

Why did you move to London?
I always wanted to live in London and in 2003 I moved here to work for Stephen Webster .In 2007 after winning the Rising Star Award I decided to start my own bespoke line. I launched my capsule collection at the Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix that year.

How did you get involved with the Nelson Mandela foundation?
I am very honoured to have this opportunity. In 2007 former president Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela launched an exhibition in Johannesburg called ‘ Making Peace’ where I designed the Nguni cow made from 18 karat gold with black and white diamonds for the occasion. I have supported his foundation through my designs ever since. In 2009 Bill Clinton was holding a gala dinner in NY for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and I designed  ‘ the hand that helps others’. Nelson Mandela’s handprint was engraved on a solid silver sheet with pave diamonds set along the lines on his palm. This was mounted on a piece of rock from Robben Island. The auction was held by Christies and the actor Morgan Freeman bought the piece. In 2010 I designed  the special  “Invictus” 46664 ( the prison number for Nelson Mandela while he was imprisoned on Robben Island) bangles for the Oscars. Morgan Freeman and Invictus producer Lori McCarthy wore them on the 82nd Academy Award red carpet. The Nelson Mandela foundation is fighting against HİV aids.

What other charity events you are involved with?
This summer I created a life size elephant, which I called the” Emerald Queen”. That, along with others was displayed on the streets of London from May to July at the biggest open air art exhibition named the “Elephant Parade”. Mine was auctioned by Sotheby’s  for  £150.000. It had a 678 carat emerald on his forehead and the money went to the funds for endangered Asian elephants. On a trip to the Kalahari Desert I was very impressed by the bushmen and we created a collection together from ostrich eggs, bones and feathers. This project has helped the bushmen to keep a stable business.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I love nature and animals and I travel a lot, so every place and everyone I meet gives me something. My inspiration is everywhere, for example I was running in Hyde Park and saw a fountain that gave me a new idea for a ring.

Whom do you really appreciate as a designer of jewellery?
I met Sevan Bıcakcı at the Tanzanite Awards in 2006 where we were both awarded and I was very impressed with his designs. I also love Georg Hornemann’s designs

What’s your next project?
I have started to work for my own charity. This summer my brother and I went with friends to Ladakh in the Himalayas, close to Kashmir. While we were there, there was a terrible flood. We were stuck there for couple of days and I was horrified by the scene I witnessed. So along with my brother  Philipp and another friend Ceila Wise we established a charity which will help build schools and help the orphans there. We called it from YOU  with LOVE (www.fromYOUwithLOVE.com ) to give back the love and support we received during theses difficult times. The charity bracelet will be a very spiritual piece due to Buddhism.

Have you ever been to Turkey?
Unfortunately not yet as my travel schedule has been over booked for a long time. I am planning to come this spring.

What is your favourite design?
I love all my pieces and every piece has its unique meaning. But The handprint of Nelson Mandela is a very special piece as i think it tells a very powerful story and I love to capture these moments.

What has been your proudest moment?
I had a lot of proud moments, but the first one in my career I remember was when I seen the medals I designed for the European  Basketball Championship as I played myself for years when I was young and it was all my life. I still love to go and see the Lakers and Knicks when I’m in LA or NYC.

Do you have a favourite character?
A german character who shared my nickname BIBI BLOCKSBERG

 What is your favourite cuisine?
I love food and love the Asian cuisine

What’s your guilty pleasure?
I guess that has to be Chocolate, my favourite Green&Blacks.
