Nada lives in Beirut and creates very original pieces using micro mosaic, that can take your breath away. What made you design Jewellery? My first love and first ten years of jewellery were designs around antique bronze pieces from the Middle East, taken out of their context and transformed into unique pieces of contemporary jewellery. Antique bronzes were my first love, my first inspiration and my first step into the world of jewellery. What started as a passion for historical artifacts from the Middle East soon turned into a contemporary jewellery collection that kept on evolving for fifteen years, with each one a unique piece. How would you describe your designs?Refined and daring, with an audacious mix of colours, a choice of unexpected materials, smooth lines and a story behind every piece.
I know you use lots of mosaic in your designs. It is very delicate and hard to work with, so why did you choose it, and what other materials do you use? After the antique bronze collection came the wood and some more classical materials such as carved mother of pearl or old cameos as well as diamonds in all shapes and colours. In 2006, after patiently collecting piece by piece for years, I finally started the most unique NADA ROMA collection of old micro mosaic jewellery . It was a 'coup de foudre' for a tiny antique Italian micro mosaic that started the journey.
Where do you get your inspiration from? From my travels, from history, from anything artistic and unusual I see or feel. Inspiration can be triggered by any form of art, an unusual shape or a beautiful opera, a piece with a historical background or anything that catches my eye. Even a feeling can inspire me.
What was the most memorable piece and for whom did you design it?I have designed many memorable pieces of jewellery and objects for special clients who keep them and collect them throughout the years.
Have you ever been to Istanbul or another city in Turkey? And if yes, what did you like most? Of course I have, many times! I love the city, the romantic situation on the Bosphorus, the fabulous history you can see and feel in every corner of every street, the palaces, museums and monuments, and this 'trendy-modern' touch with its restaurants, galleries and talented designers. Istanbul is a harmonious fusion of eastern and western civilisation, a contemporary city, integrated in a historical metropol, where culture meets the good life.
Who do you find challenging as jewellery designer?JAR is the most challenging in creating extremely refined designs on so many different and avant-garde materials…and in Istanbul, definitely Sevan whom I visited last year. Tuana Zeynep Bilgin |
