-

When baby starts to achieve their milestones like sitting up, crawling, walking, and so on, it is a huge sigh of relief and satisfaction for the parents. The parents are always worried about their baby’s health and body development and keeping a check on their baby’s milestones’ timeline.

Sitting up is one of the crucial milestones that baby crosses around the time of four to eight months, and it is what paves the way for other important milestones like crawling, standing, walking, and so on. In this article, we would touch all the important aspects that are related to the baby achieving the milestone of sitting up.

When Do Babies Start to Sit Up?

Some babies can develop enough back and neck strength to be able to sit up momentarily around the period of four to five months. However, for babies to sit independently without any support, you might have to wait a little longer as most babies would be able to achieve that milestone around seven to ten months. After 4 to 5 months from birth, the babies can develop enough strength in their neck and back to support head control.

Signs That Baby Will Sit Up Soon

Around the age of 3-4 months, the babies can sit up with the help of external support from parents or some other vertical support like a baby chair. Around the age of 5-7 months, most babies would be able to sit up independently on their own without support but may end up toppling down at times.

Even though many babies can sit for some time on their own and may also get to the sitting position on their own around five to eight months, they would always need some support to remain in a sitting position for long. If the baby is able to control neck movement and has developed sufficient shoulder and arm strength, it would be able to sit up soon.

They would not require any support for sitting up around the end of 11 months or a year. The timeline for these milestones always differs in babies as parents must stay away from developing the habit of comparing their child with others in terms of who achieves the milestones first. When do babies start sitting up depends mostly on the mix of right exercises, body growth, and other environmental factors that work collectively to help baby progress into achieving the sitting up milestone.

At What Age do Babies Sit Up?

Sitting up is one of the most crucial milestones for their babies as it helps in developing neck, shoulders, arm and back muscles and signifies that these muscles are developed enough to support head control and sitting posture. It starts with baby gaining head control around the end of three to five months.

Since the time the babies gain head control, they are constantly in the process of achieving the next milestone, which is sitting up. Most babies sit up around the age of five months, but it is a milestone they would be able to achieve independence and for long without toppling down only after 10-12 months.

If your baby has not been able to sit up unsupported around the period of 8-10 months, it may be a good idea to follow up with your pediatrician to get more precise answers on why the baby hasn’t been able to sit up.

How to Teach Your Baby Sit Up?

Teaching baby to sit up is fun, and all you need to do is play with the baby in a way that keeps them highly physically active. Play with the baby while getting down on the floor with the baby. When the baby sees you on his/her level, it is sure to make it more enjoyable for the baby.

The role of parents is very crucial when it comes to how fast the babies reach their milestones. The parents need to spend quality playtime with their babies to ensure that the baby is active. Lure the baby to catch the toy of their liking or keep the toy at a little distance to lure them into making movements.

The babies may not be able to reach the toy, but it would inevitably lead the babies to make movements that work as a gym work out for babies. It helps with muscle development that leads to enhanced strength. It is this enhanced strength that leads to baby achieving their milestones, including sitting up, crawling, standing, walking, running, and more.

Parents should ensure that the baby is getting a sufficient amount of tummy time each day. It is one of the best positions for the babies to exercise and develop their muscles across the length and breadth of the body. Tummy time would lead to motor control of the head, and it would help the baby to gain head control, which would give the baby time to focus on developing strength in other areas of the body like in arms, legs, and shoulder.

Parents must use chairs, lap or in strollers for their kids to be able to sit for a while every day with the help of a support. It gives the babies an entirely new perspective as to how they can see the world, and it generates curiosity in them that leads to babies sitting up. Luring the baby with a toy from different positions would also help the baby to do neck muscle exercises that would enable them to sit up.

In the end, it all comes down to how much playtime your baby is getting that would lead them to become more active and achieving their milestones timely.

It is this excitement in the baby that would push the baby towards milestones faster. Provide your baby support with your hands or through the chair to help sit up. Providing support for a couple of months when sitting up would pave the way to the babies sitting up without support eventually.

Baby Milestones

Babies grow very fast, and there are many new milestones that they continue to reach each month. Let us delve deeper into the milestones that the baby would achieve in its first year.

1-3 Months

In the first three months, the babies would develop their hearing, recognize familiar faces, react to the sweet smells and can open and close their hands. The baby can recognize the faces of parents and is comforted by their touch and sound. During the second month, the baby can lift their shoulder a bit during their tummy time. Some babies can mimic some sounds and make eye contact.

4-6 Months

During this period, the babies begin teething, and they love to play with toys. They start to react to different colors and develop the ability to giggle and laugh. Some babies can roll up from the stomach to their back without assistance. Babies love to play with toys at this time as they start to develop their sensory skills and recognize different colors and shapes. Babies can listen clearly to the voices and react to familiar sounds.

7-9 Months

At this point, the hearing of the baby is thoroughly developed, and they can see full colors as well. Many babies can sit up without any assistance for some time and can differentiate between different shapes as well. Some common words like – Yes, No, Dada, Mama, are understood by the babies at this time. The leg muscles have developed considerably at this point for the babies to hold some weight. Babies may also start crawling during this period and do mini push-ups as well.

10-12 Months

The babies would be able to say Mama and Dada at this time and would be able to recognize familiar sounds they hear every day. The ability to hold and pick up a few of their toys without assistance is also developed in this period. The hand-eye and ear coordination increases and the babies can listen and look at the same time. Babies may walk during this period while talking assistance from the furniture or by holding their hands. Understanding commands like eat, come here, sit down, become clearer around one year. As children can see and hear at the same time, listening to stories become much more fun. The ability to sit for longer without assistance is possible at this time.

When Do Babies Sit Up on Their Own?

The babies sit up on their own around the time they are four to seven months old and perfect the skill of sitting up for long without assistance around 11 months to a year.

Average Age for Baby to Sit Up

The average age of babies sitting up is around six months, and it varies by a couple of months as the development cycle of different babies varies.

Exercises to Help Baby Sit Up

Babies grow quickly but parents must do their part as well to help babies achieve their milestones timely. Parents can help babies perform some exercises to ensure optimal body growth and development that leads to achieving baby milestones. Here are the few basic exercises that you must engage baby in –

    • The best practice for your baby to sit up is for your baby to have a tummy time every day. It helps in increasing the muscle strength in different parts of the body that is necessary to act of sitting up.
    • Lure the baby with toys or even mirror during tummy time for the baby to look up or make a move towards the toy. It accelerates the development of neck and arm muscles that help the baby to sit up.
    • Place intriguing objects nearby at a small distance from the baby for him/her to try and get close to these objects. It would trigger the baby to move towards it and the effort the baby puts into it helps with muscle development in related body parts like arm, leg, shoulder, and neck.
    • Allow baby to play around in considerably ample space and don’t keep confined in a small crib all the time. Confining in a crib would restrict body growth whereas playing in an open area would keep the baby active and healthy.

Sitting up is one of the critical milestones for babies and parents should know how they can help the baby achieve it. However, let the babies go with their natural flow and don’t overdo it as you do not want to stress the baby with too much activity as well. Focus on the baby’s proper diet and optimal physical exercise daily, and you will see your baby reaching the milestones before you even realize.
